About Me

s_fam091.jpg this one better?

Hello! I am Savanna, a California native transplanted to the Midwest raising three little munchkins, and hopefully some chickens too some day!  We fill our days with lots of picnics, bug catching, and rocket building, while I try to provide them with yummy nutritious meals. I love the creative process that goes into making a meal and I love the bonding that takes place through food and cooking together with my husband and children.

When I am not in the kitchen, I love to craft and makes things, especially for my kids. I find it so rewarding creating things with my own hands and I enjoy all kinds of crafts. I’m usually working on many projects at once and have a long crafty to-do wish list, so I am never stumped for something to do (with all that free time I have. . . HAH!)!

CULINARY BACKGROUND

After my second year of college at Brigham Young University, I got married and moved to Philadelphia for my husband to begin dental school. I began an independent study program through BYU, but I greatly missed the classroom setting and the competition and interaction with peers.  During this time I kept dreaming of going to culinary school and finally reached a point where I just could not continue independent study any longer (and really needed that push to get out of my pjs during the day! 😉 ). As I was brainstorming other options, my family discovered that Drexel University (which was right near where we lived!) offered a bachelor’s degree IN culinary arts! It all seemed meant to be as I completed my bachelor’s with an emphasis in culinary arts and it was truly one of the highlights of my life.

Since then, I have worked with a catering company and in a cafe, baked thousands of cakes and treats in a bakery, and constantly dream of owning an old-fashioned ice cream/soda fountain shop!  But for right now, our house is Savanna’s Cafe and my husband, Jesse, and our three children are my best taste testers and love being with me in the kitchen.
